Goa Culture and Lifestyle

Owing to its centuries of colonial rule, the Goan culture is a blend of the Portuguese and Indian lifestyles. The Portuguese were great church builders so the place is dotted with numerous churches along with temples that were constructed by later civilizations.

Music and Dance:
Music is an integral part of the Goan peopleís lives. Other than local Konkani music and songs from other parts of the country, you can also hear Portuguese music as well as the famous trance of Goa, which is known to breeze away into the listenerís heart. There is music at every step in Goa from the soul soothing sound of the church bells early in the morning to the Mando songs in the evening.

Dance is another aspect of the Goan lifestyle that displays a strong colonial influence. Some of the known dance forms of Goa include the Dekni, Kunbi, Morulem and the Zagor.

People of Goa:
Goans or the people of Goa are a jolly bunch of people who believe in living life to the fullest. The laws of the state treat every religion equally and women are given identical status as men in every walk of life. The women are outgoing and dress in western outfits while the men carry themselves with a certain degree of machismo and love sports such as football and bull fighting.

Fashion in Goa:
Besides their lifestyle, Goans are also known for their colourful fashion. With time though, the traditional clothes have been replaced by designer labels. When in Goa, you can look forward to buy some of the finest textile and embroidery work from all parts of the country.

Goa Cuisine:
Food and cooking is taken very seriously by the Goan people and is prepared mostly with locally available ingredients. Being a coastal area, the cuisine in Goa consists of a lot of sea food such as fish, mussels, prawns, crabs, oysters etc. The food is also mostly cooked in coconut oil.
