Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated in the Sanguem Taluka on the eastern border of Goa, Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary or the Mollem Game sanctuary is sprawled over a huge area of 240 sq km. The region was first declared a sanctuary in 1969 to offer a protected space for the area’s wildlife and has since witnessed its wildlife population grow to over thousands of species of plants and animals.

The park offers ample accommodation options including a few cottages and dormitories built by the tourism department.

With its huge area and favorable conditions, the sanctuary houses a huge variety of animals including the Panther, Mouse Deer, Porcupine, Leopard Cat, Bonnet Macaque, Flying Squirrel, Slendor Loris, Gaur, Barking Deer and a few tigers. The region is also known for its population of King Cobras besides other snake species such as Python, Viper and Krait. Apart from these, over 200 kinds of birds are also found including the Indian Black Woodpecker, Paradise Fly Catcher, Barbets and Kingfisher.

How to Reach Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary
National Highway 4A passes through the sanctuary, which makes it easily accessible by road. Panaji, the capital of Goa is just 60 km away from where you can take a bus or hire a taxi to reach the sanctuary. Dabolim airport is located at a distance of 80 km while Colem is the nearest railway station at a distance of just 6 km.

Best time to visit Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary
Though the sanctuary remains open throughout the year, the best time for a visit are the winter months from November to March when the suitable climate maximizes the chances of spotting rare animals. It is advisable to opt for the jeep safari operated by the forest department in the morning and evening every day. It is also recommended to spend at least a couple of days in the park as it is not easy to cover the entire sanctuary in a single day.
